Best Surfer SEO alternatives, by the job you need done

Surfer scores a page while you write it, and its editor is the best in the category at that job. The six tools below replace different parts of it: scoring a draft, writing a brief, planning what to publish, or deciding which page is worth the hours at all. SitePerfector is the last of them because we build it, and it gets the same two lines as everything else on the list.

Prices and features checked 3 Sep 2026 on each vendor's own pages.

1. Clearscope

$129/mo Essentials, $399/mo Business. 14-day free trial on every tier. Extra pages and drafts sold in blocks on top.

Best for

Clearscope grades a draft inside Google Docs, where your writers already work. Adobe, Shopify, IBM and Condé Nast are named on its customer page, and the company has been independent and bootstrapped for six years.

Where it stops

It starts after you have chosen the keyword. Essentials meters you in Pages, Tracked Prompts, Topic Explorations and Drafts, all counted per document. At $129 a month it is the most expensive way to score a page here.

2. Frase

$39/mo billed yearly on Starter ($49 monthly), up to $239/mo on Scale. Seven-day free trial, no card. Extra seats $29/mo.

Best for

Frase puts research, brief, draft, optimize and publish on one bill. Its briefs are the best in the category, and AI-visibility tracking is included on every plan instead of sold on top. Frase published a post in April 2026 setting out the limits of its own scoring model.

Where it stops

It starts with a query you supply. Topic Clusters group keywords you already have, so Frase does not say which topics your business should own or which of them you can win against the sites ranking today. The content calendar and internal linking start on the $103/mo Professional plan.

3. NeuronWriter

Bronze $23/mo, Silver $45, Gold $69, Platinum $93, Diamond $117. Lower on annual billing. Seven-day trial on Gold terms.

Best for

NeuronWriter does per-document term analysis and internal linking suggestions at the lowest price in this group. Trustpilot shows 4.5 across 68 reviews on 3 September 2026, 90 percent of them five-star. It suits someone who already knows what a content brief is for.

Where it stops

Everything is metered per project and per content analysis, and the meter starts once you have chosen the keyword. There is no view of your existing site against your market. The price of the AI monitoring add-on is only visible once you are logged in.

4. Dashword

Startup $99/mo for 30 content reports, Business from $349/mo for 100. First report free, no credit card. 20 percent off annual, arranged by contacting them.

Best for

Dashword gives a clean brief and a readable score to someone who is not an SEO specialist. It monitors pages after publication and tells you when one needs updating. The API and MCP server are on every plan, so an agent can call the scoring endpoint directly.

Where it stops

You bring the keyword and it does the rest. There is no map of your whole site against your market, and nothing tells you which report to run next. You buy reports by the block: 30 a month on Startup at $99, 100 on Business from $349.

5. MarketMuse

No price published. The pricing page lists Free, Optimize, Research and Strategy with limits and a Book a demo button. Third-party reviews from the last quarter still quote $99 to $499/mo.

Best for

MarketMuse has argued for topic-first planning since 2013. The site Inventory tracks every published page automatically, with no upload. Personalized Difficulty scores a topic for your site rather than for an average site.

Where it stops

It was built for teams. Their own page names the buyer as brands, publishers and agencies with SEOs, strategists and editors on staff. Queries and briefs are metered separately and capped per plan, and there is no published price, so you book a demo to find out what it costs.

6. SitePerfector

$7 for the first 14 days, then $39/mo on Basic. Pro $99, Agency $179. Founder pricing, locked for life for the first 50 members.

Best for

SitePerfector decides which page is worth writing, before anyone opens an editor. We map your market into themes, topics and pages from live search results, lay your existing site over it, and name the sites you would be beating on each topic. Each market map reads roughly 40,000 ranked positions and vets up to 1,500 keyword ideas, of which around a hundred earn a place.

Where it stops

There is no live content score while you write. You get a blueprint per page built from what the top results cover and the gap they leave, and no density target to write towards. We have no backlink or PPC data, no AI-visibility tracking, no bulk generation and nothing that publishes on a schedule.

How to choose

  • If your job is writing to a live score inside Google Docs, pick Clearscope.
  • If your job is research, brief, draft and publish on one bill, pick Frase.
  • If your job is per-document term analysis and internal linking, pick NeuronWriter.
  • If your job is a clean brief that a non-specialist can follow, pick Dashword.
  • If your job is planning at team scale, with editors and writers on staff, pick MarketMuse and budget for the demo call.
  • If your job is deciding which page to write next, pick SitePerfector.

I would keep Surfer for the editor if scoring drafts is the part you use every day. Clearscope, Frase, NeuronWriter and Dashword all start after the keyword is chosen; SitePerfector reads the live results per topic, says whether your site can win it, and names the sites you would be beating, so you can open that results page and check the answer yourself.

SitePerfector is not the pick when you already have a plan and want a number to write against, and it has no backlink data, no PPC data and no AI-visibility tracking.

Questions

Which of these is closest to Surfer?

Clearscope, then Frase. Both grade a draft against the current top results while you write, and Clearscope runs inside Google Docs, which is why editorial teams standardise on it. If the editor was the part of Surfer you used, start with Clearscope.

Is SitePerfector a Surfer SEO alternative?

For deciding what to write, yes. For a live content score while you write, no. Surfer's editor is the better tool for that job, and some people run both, SitePerfector to pick the page and Surfer to polish it. See the full comparison.

Do any of these replace Semrush or Ahrefs?

No. Nothing on this list has a backlink index, a PPC database or a keyword database you can query on its own, SitePerfector included. If that is what you are shopping for, read the Semrush alternatives list.
