SitePerfector vs Surfer SEO

Surfer scores a page you have already decided to write. SitePerfector tells you which page to write next, and which sites you would have to beat.

Surfer's content editor is the best in the category, and its AI tracker reports how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand. Both start after you have picked the page. SitePerfector picks the page: it maps your market into topics, lays your existing site over that map, reads the live results, and says which topics you can win.

SitePerfector topic tree: the topics you can own, in order, with the competitors named

One market as a topic tree: themes, topics and pages, with the call on each topic.

Who each one is for

Surfer SEO

Content optimizer

Marketers, agencies and SEO teams who already know what to write. Surfer's homepage says it is built for marketers. If a strategist or a client brief decides the topic, Surfer is the right tool for the step after that.

SitePerfector

Topic-first SEO

Site owners and small teams who do not have a plan yet. You know your subject and you have a site, and the open question is which pages to build and in what order. SitePerfector answers that first, then gives you a blueprint for each page.

How the two approaches differ

Keyword tools hand you data and leave the decision to you. Topic-first SEO hands you a decision, with the reason and the competitors named. The method itself is explained in Topic-first SEO: what it is and why it works. This page only shows the contrast.

Surfer SEO

You start with

A page you have already chosen, or topic ideas drawn from your Google Search Console data. Surfer's Topical Map page calls them content ideas.

You publish

A page written towards a score: terms, length and headings matched to the pages currently in the top ten.

What you get

  • You get topic ideas. Which of them your site can win is still your call.
  • Your existing pages are not laid over the market, so a topic you never wrote about has no row.
  • You get a score to write towards, built from the pages currently in the top ten.
  • You pick the next page yourself, with the ideas as input.

SitePerfector

You start with

Your market, read from live search results and grouped into themes, topics and pages. Up to 1,500 keyword ideas get vetted and around a hundred earn a place.

You publish

The next page in the order, with a blueprint built from what the top results cover and the gap they leave. You write it, edit an AI draft, or hand the brief to a writer.

What you get

  • You get a topic tree: themes, topics and pages, in the order to build them.
  • Every topic carries a call and the names of the sites you would be competing against.
  • Your own pages sit on the map: covered, off the map, or already ranking without you knowing.
  • Each page you approve comes with a blueprint built from the live results.

Facts about Surfer SEO checked 3 Sep 2026 on their own pages. The sources are listed at the bottom of this page.

Three differences you can check

1.Surfer suggests topics. It does not tell you which of them your site can win.

Surfer's Topical Map is real planning. You connect Google Search Console, it suggests topics for your niche, shows competitor coverage, and turns a suggestion into an outline. What it does not do is say which of those topics your site can win, name the sites you would have to beat, or show you what it left out. SitePerfector reads roughly 40,000 ranked positions per market map and returns a call on each topic: own it, build up to it, or leave it. The competing sites are named next to the call, so you can check it yourself.

Open Surfer's Topical Map page. The headline is "Find Your Next Content Ideas". Then open a topic in SitePerfector and read the list of sites it says you would be competing against.

2.Surfer plans from your Search Console data. SitePerfector plans from the live results and a crawl of your site.

Google Search Console only knows the pages you already have, so a topic you never wrote about has no row in it. Surfer's Content Audit finds decaying pages and Pro and up flags cannibalization, which covers what is already published. SitePerfector crawls your site and lays every page over the market map: covered, off the map, or already ranking without you knowing. No Search Console connection is needed, which matters if you never set one up.

In Surfer, open Topical Map and look at what it asks you to connect. In SitePerfector, open the coverage view and read the "off the map" column for your own domain.

3.Surfer's editor gives you a score to write towards. SitePerfector's blueprint gives you the questions to answer.

A Surfer score comes from the terms, length and headings of the pages currently in the top ten, and it is the best score of its kind. It tells you how close your draft is to those pages. SitePerfector builds its blueprint from the same live results, but what comes back is the questions the top results answer and the gap they leave, not a number to move towards. Neither Google nor an AI answer reads a content score. We left it out for that reason.

Run the free What Ranks Here on one keyword you care about and read the top results it lists. Then open the same keyword in Surfer's Content Editor and compare what each one asks you to write.

When to choose Surfer, and when to choose SitePerfector

Choose Surfer SEO if

  • You already know what to write and want the best live editor in the category to write it in.
  • You run an agency or a content team producing at volume, and the topic decisions are made upstream.
  • You need reporting on how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand.
  • You want the free AI detector and humanizer, which Surfer keeps unpaywalled.

Choose SitePerfector if

  • You have a site and a subject, and the open question is which pages to build and in what order.
  • You want each recommendation to name the sites you would be competing against, so you can check it.
  • You never set up Search Console, or you do not want the plan limited to what your site already ranks for.
  • You would rather publish fewer pages and know why each one exists.

Questions

Is SitePerfector a Surfer SEO alternative?

For deciding what to write, yes. For scoring a draft while you write it, no. Surfer's editor is the better tool for that job, and some people run both: SitePerfector to pick the page, Surfer to write it.

Does SitePerfector have a content score?

No. Each page gets a blueprint built from what the top results cover and the gap they leave. We left the density score out on purpose.

Does SitePerfector track AI visibility like Surfer's AI Tracker?

No, and we do not sell it as a separate product. AI answers cite the pages that rank, so the work that gets you cited is the work that gets you ranked. Surfer includes that tracking in every paid plan if you need the reporting.

Can I use both?

Yes. Decide the page in SitePerfector, then write it in Surfer's editor. If you already pay for Surfer and like the editor, I would keep it and use SitePerfector for the decision.

What does the $7 get me?

Fourteen days of the full Basic plan: your market mapped, your site laid over it, the pages worth writing in order, and a blueprint for each. Then $39 a month, cancel anytime. Nothing is held back in the fourteen days.
