People talk about "AI search" as if ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Meta AI work the same way. They do not. Different user bases, different source pools, different citation patterns. Tracking only ChatGPT and assuming the rest follow is the most common visibility blind spot in 2026.
There are at least five major AI answer engines worth tracking. Source overlap between them is small. A brand cited by ChatGPT might be invisible on Gemini, dominant on Perplexity, and unmentioned on Meta AI.
Treating "AI search" as one game means tracking one engine and assuming the others behave similarly. They don't. Here's what's actually different about each.
ChatGPT
Largest user base. Mainstream consumer awareness. The default "AI" most non-technical people mean when they say AI.
Source pool: a mix of training data and live web retrieval, depending on plan and mode. Recent updates have pushed harder on site: queries to brand domains when the brand is recognized, then layered third-party sources around that.
Citation behavior: cites a small number of sources per substantive answer in modes that show citations. Often cites a brand site alongside Reddit threads or industry publications discussing that brand.
Audience: broad consumer. Marketers, students, professionals, casual users. Heavy "explain X to me" usage.
If you only optimize for one engine, this is usually it. But "only optimize for one" is the trap.
Gemini
Google's AI assistant. Google Workspace users live here. So do many B2B audiences and people who are deep in the Google ecosystem.
Source pool: tied tightly to Google's index. Citations skew heavily toward what already ranks well on Google. If your traditional SEO is strong, you have a head start in Gemini that you don't have in ChatGPT.
Citation behavior: tends to cite fewer sources but with more weight on each. Strongly favors authoritative domains.
Audience: skews professional, B2B, productivity-focused. Many users find Gemini through Google Search or Workspace integration rather than visiting a separate app.
If your audience is B2B SaaS or productivity-adjacent, Gemini visibility might matter more than ChatGPT visibility for you.
Claude
Anthropic's assistant. Fastest-growing referral traffic source for many sites in 2026.
Source pool: web retrieval plus training data. Tends toward sources that read as well-reasoned and substantive. Long-form, expert-written content does well here.
Citation behavior: cites with attribution clearly. Tends to favor primary sources and depth.
Audience: skews technical and analytical. Developers, researchers, writers, operators who care about quality of reasoning. Lower mainstream awareness than ChatGPT but higher engagement per user.
If your audience is developer-adjacent, technical-buyer, or analytically-minded, Claude visibility is disproportionately important.
Perplexity
The most search-engine-shaped of the five. Built around retrieval-then-answer with prominent citations.
Source pool: live web retrieval. Heavy weight on recency and authoritative sources. Strong Reddit presence in citations.
Citation behavior: cites multiple sources prominently per answer. The citations are part of the product. Users click through more often than on other engines.
Audience: skews to power users, journalists, researchers. People who want to verify the answer, not just get it.
If your audience is research-driven or you operate in a niche where citations matter (medical, legal, financial, technical), Perplexity is high-leverage.
Meta AI
A billion users via Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp. Most marketers ignore it. That's a mistake for some audiences.
Source pool: less documented than the others. Pulls from Meta's social signals heavily, which makes Reddit and similar discussion forums weighty for non-Meta retrieval.
Citation behavior: less consistent than the others. Sometimes cites, sometimes generates from training data without attribution.
Audience: huge but skews casual / consumer. Most queries are quick and general.
If your business is consumer-facing and your audience uses Instagram or WhatsApp heavily, Meta AI matters more than your marketing dashboards suggest.
How to Audit Where You Show Up
Start with your customers, not with the engines.
In your next five sales or onboarding calls, ask one question: "Where did you go when you first tried to figure out [your problem space]?" Don't lead with "ChatGPT or Google?" Let them tell you. Many will mention an AI engine without prompting. Some will say "a friend," "Reddit," or "I asked someone on our team." Those answers are signal too.
After five calls you'll have a real read on where your buyers actually start their research, not where you assume they do. That's worth more than any visibility tool.
Then, and only then, go look:
Run the queries they would have asked. Not your branded terms. The questions that came before they knew you existed. "How do I [solve their problem]?" "What's the best [category] for [their use case]?" The pre-purchase queries.
Look at what's getting cited. Which sources are answering this question right now? Are you in the answer? Are sources you'd never thought about being cited? A niche subreddit. A competitor's case study. A podcast transcript.
Document the gap honestly. Per query, write one sentence: "For [query], [engine] cites [these sources]. We're [in / out]. The reason is [we lack X, our content doesn't extract cleanly, we're not in [community]]."
That document is your starting point. It's more useful than any tool's "AI visibility score."
Reading the Question, Not the Job Title
The temptation is to map job titles to engines. "Marketers use ChatGPT, finance uses Gemini, developers use Claude." Sometimes, sure. More often, the same person uses different engines for different questions.
A cleaner way to think about it: read the type of question your customer is asking before they buy from you, then ask which engine that question fits.
- "What's the best [category] for [my situation]?" ChatGPT and Gemini lead. Perplexity if they want sources.
- "How does [thing] actually work, technically?" Claude and Perplexity. ChatGPT for the simpler version.
- "Compare [A] vs [B] for [my use]?" Perplexity is high-leverage here because citations carry weight. Claude for depth. ChatGPT and Gemini for the consumer version.
- "Quick answer while I'm scrolling." Meta AI.
- "Explain X to me casually." ChatGPT default.
The same customer can be on three different engines in the same week. The mapping that matters is the type of question, not the demographic of the asker.
This is why the audit you just ran with real customer pre-purchase queries is more useful than a generic engine-by-engine scan. Each query tells you which engine's behavior it's asking about.
What This Means for You
You don't need five separate strategies. You need to know which engine your buyers actually use, and you need presence (or know about your absence) on that platform.
The work doesn't multiply by five. The audit does. The mindset shift does. The actual content work, off-site presence work, and writing-for-citation work translates across all five engines because the underlying mechanics are similar.
What changes per engine is the audit, not the work.
